Hairspray is the story of an enthusiastic kid named Tracy Turnblad, a would-be dancer who wants to gain a place on a neighbouring TV show named the Corny Collins Show. Tracy is unfamiliar in the dancing industry when she auditions, yet she is chosen for one of the dancing places and against long odds becomes a dancing star nearly overnight. Tracy is encouraged with this newfound fame, and she chooses to utilise her celebrity status to make positive changes to the TV show. The key motivation behind these positive improvements relates to race. Tracy hopes to racially unite the TV show, & as any person might well guess, she is faced with lots of opposition.

Hairspray moved to London’s West End in two thousand & seven, opening for previews at the Shaftesbury Theatre on October the eleventh, before being unveiled to the public at its big opening on October 30, two-thousand and seven. The show has had some huge name actors — Michael Ball takes the part of Edna Turnblad, Tracy’s mother, providing a very believable interpretation in this demanding female position, whilst Mel Smith played joke shop landlord Wilbur Turnblad, Tracy’s father. The original cast in the West End also includes newcomer to the theatre arena, Leanne Jones, in the part of Tracy.

Hairspray the musical play has got lots of upbeat remarks from critics and show fans alike. Jacqueline remarked: “I have been 4 times now and I will be going back yet again sometime next week and a few more times after that. I love the theatre show and wish they could stay on longer. Ben Ellis is incredible as link and Leanne Jones as Tracey and Michael Ball, well they are all simply excellent. The play hairspray is without any doubt my favourite, mainly because its upbeat and if you are feeling a little low then it will make you feel a whole lot happier. I definitely give it a 10 out of ten – I love it congratulations everyone.
