Ski Holidays for the Carbon Aware Traveler
Countless avid skiers will soon be searching for their ski gear and shooting away trying to find the biggest snowfall.
And without doubt the result from your carbon footprint will be almost as far down the list of vacation musts as a xmas tree after the Christmas vacation.
Merely last Christmas, a sluggish snow hit the tabloids and holidaymakers were panic struck about the bits of snow disappearing nearly as soon as they put down.
Skiing company Chalet1802, based at the bottom of Monte Bianco in Chamonix Mont Blanc in the French Alps, is one of the first independent businesses to go carbon negative and provide skiers an environmentally friendly option while organising their skiing holidays.
Chalet1802 proprietor Philip said: Last season was a bit of a surprise with the most warm wintertime in 55 years in the French Alps. Mountain skiing areas like Gourette, Plateau de Beille and La Rosiere lacked clients. It was warm and the snow didn’t settle so much of the early season snowboarding season in the mountains was uneven. We determined to become carbon negative to help preserve the skiing resort.
Philip said: We’re not seeking to prescribe to punters but I feel it is all important to give them the selection without raising the cost of the skiing holiday. When the guest book with us and goes to our Chamonix luxury chalet they may further off-set their carbon footprint and we absorb the additional costs. Naturally we still have a sauna and a hot tub – guests want luxuriousness but not at the expense of the alps mountains, so we viewed means of reducing the results of a guest traveling over here for a winter holiday.”
The firm have moreover partnered with charity Climate Care, which attacks global warming by making carbon dioxide reductions for individuals and businesses.
